|Session 1: July 2-6 (no camp on 7/4)
Summer on the Farm
Explore the summer season on our own Heckscher Farm. Learn about the different products made on a small New England farm, visit our organic garden and meet our heritage breed animals, and even get a behind the scenes tour from one of our farmers. We'll create farm-themed art projects and have a special guest sit for a portrait- one of our Spring Goat babies!
Session 2: July 9-13
Tour our hiking trails, learning about our local flora and fauna and gathering materials for our Eco Art projects along the way. We'll create 2D and 3D works using these natural materials, and learn about nature's builders. We'll visit our Recycled ReCreations Makerspace for inspiration before we create our own large scale recycled material sculptures- and meet some of nature's "recyclers"!
Session 3: July 16-20
Wild, Wonderful Water
Explore the bodies of water at SM&NC, as we visit our stream, pond, and vernal pool. We'll learn about the animals that live there and the importance of water in our ecosystem, and get a chance to meet some aquatic animals that call SM&NC home, and even prepare food for them! We'll also experiment with water-based media for our art projects.
|Session 4: July 23-27
Learn about predators and prey, and visit our special exhibit Once Endangered: The Return of Peregrine Falcons and Wolves. We'll hike our woods looking for signs of local predators, and get a chance to meet our own Willow the Owl up close. We'll work on animal themed art projects and put on our chef's hats as we prepare food for some of SM&NC's favorite predators- our otters!
Session 5: July 30-August 3
Plants and Potions
Explore local flora and learn to identify useful wild plants. We'll wildcraft ingredients for our own natural plant dyes, work in our vegetable garden and create artwork with paints that we make from pigments found in nature. We'll also learn about local invasive species and how to cook with some of them! We'll end the week by planting our own miniature herb garden to take home and grow all summer.
Session 6: August 6-10
Colors of Nature
In our final week, we'll be naturalists as we search our woods for artistic inspiration. We'll create field notebooks, sketch and identify the different species we encounter and meet and draw many of the animals here at SM&NC, working in watercolors, pastels, and more. We'll build site-specific sculptures in the woods and end with a showcase of the work the campers have created.

First Day of Camp: On the first day of each session, the office will open at 9:20 am and we will be available to meet parents and answer any questions you may have about the program. At that time we will confirm that all documents are in order. If you have questions prior to your first day of camp, please feel free to e-mail our Camp Director, Lisa Monachelli at email@example.com.
Check-in & Check-out: At drop-off & pick-up we ask that you sign your child in/out with the on-duty counselor. If there are persons other then parents who are authorized to pick up your child they must be listed on your camper information form. If changes or additions occur during the course of camp, we must be notified in writing. Please note that we may ask for photo ID from those picking up campers–please have friends and family be prepared.
Medical Issues: Serious medical conditions must be brought to our attention before camp begins. If, for example, your child has an allergy requiring an EpiPen, there are additional documents that you and your child's doctor must sign before camp begins. All appropriate medical forms & permission agreements with required signatures MUST be submitted one week before the start of your child's first camp session. Per Connecticut State Camp Regulations, no child will be allowed to attend camp unless ALL forms are on file prior to their first day of camp.
Lunch & Snack: Please provide a daily bag snack (reusable bags preferred) for your child. We ask that campers come with a reusable water bottle each day. SM&NC is a NUT AWARE camp, so please do not send items with any type of tree nut/peanut product in them; please check labels carefully. There is a refrigerator available. If your child is staying for Lunch Bunch, send them with a daily nut-free lunch as well.
Dress Code: Pants or shorts and a T-shirt are the norm. Since campers will be in the forest and on the farm, open toed shoes, flip flops, or sandals are NOT allowed. Socks and a pair of sneakers you don't mind getting dirty are perfect. We also recommend bringing an extra change of clothes and we may ask for a towel or water shoes if we are using sprinklers or exploring the stream. Please be sure that your child arrives at camp with a long-lasting, waterproof sunscreen applied. Due to state regulations, our staff cannot apply sunscreen or bug spray. Please check for ticks at each day's end!
Special Friends: We have two groups of campers each session. All rising 1st graders will be in a group together and all rising 2nd-4th graders will be in a group together. If your child's friends are rising to the same grade and registered for the same week and same camp, they will be in the same group.
We are looking forward to meeting you and sharing a memorable summer experience.
