Housatonic Valley Waldorf® School, the only Waldorf grade school in Connecticut, is located in Newtown, CT. We offer accredited Waldorf education programs for children as well as aftercare, Summer Camp, and many lectures and special events.

The seeds of our school were planted on April 12, 1989 when a small group of parents first met in New Milford, CT to discuss opening a Waldorf-based kindergarten. The following January, a weekly playgroup began in New Milford, and within the year grew into a three-day nursery-kindergarten known as Star Meadow. In October 1990 the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School Association, Inc. was formed with the goal of starting a Waldorf school that spanned Early Childhood through Grade 8. With expansion and several more moves, HVWS finally settled into its own campus in the western part of Newtown, CT. Today, HVWS is a thriving and fully accredited Waldorf school, with additional programs for children, Waldorf teachers, and adults.

All Waldorf schools operate with a governance structure of shared leadership. HVWS is governed by a Board of Trustees and a College of Teachers, and is supported by an Administrative Team and a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). The Board of Trustees is responsible for financial, legal, and property matters. Decisions about teaching matters belong to the College of Teachers, drawn from faculty leadership. The Administration Team oversees the daily operations of the school. The active PTA is the interlinking body that supports school life, provides community activities, and helps to carry many volunteer tasks that are critical to our growth.

HVWS Summer Camp is a day camp for boys and girls ages 3-12 during July and August. Offering two groups—Group 1 for 3- to 7-year-olds and Group 2 for 8- to 12-year-olds—Summer Camp features weekly full-day programs with both before and after care available. It is the perfect place for natural and exciting summer fun!

Led by caring and talented educators, HVWS Summer Camp invites children to get a taste of a variety of activities that are aligned with the principles of Waldorf education. With just the right balance of activities and relaxation, children also enjoy the occasional field trip and are always inspired by the week’s activities, which feature wholesome, natural themes.

The Summer Camp day runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and children must bring a lunch. A snack is provided.
