Ages for which our activities are most appropriate:
Greenwich Kempo provides an enriched martial arts learning environment that has helped countless students get ahead. Founded in 2013 as Kempo Academy of Greenwich, our school is located in Cos Cob, Connecticut and reflects the diverse backgrounds and cultures of the area. We became Greenwich Kempo in September 2016, and our good work continues to this day. Currently, we have over 125 students and four awesome teachers eager to learn, create, and grow together.

With the help of a great teacher, the martial arts can transform us into peaceful warriors. They change us from within, bestowing upon us an ability to navigate life’s push and pull with presence, clarity, and an anchored center. They give us an assurance we carry with us forever.

At Greenwich Kempo, we’re passionate about building confidence, compassion, and community through the martial arts. As Professional Ninjas, Super Heroes, and Jedi Knights, we teach skills and discipline that can ignite a passion within. What’s more, we do it in a way that’s both serious and seriously fun.

We offer camps and classes for students of all ages and skill, from child to adult.

More Than Just Karate Class

One size does not fit all—and neither does one teaching method. As teachers, in every class, we meet every student as an individual on a journey, enfolding him or her into our respectful collective. We develop caring relationships with our students, adapting our extensive knowledge and experience to meet the social, emotional, and educational needs of all. Peer learning, self-directed study, volunteer opportunities, community-building events (and more), further enrich the Greenwich Kempo experience.

Fundamentals Class
Ages 4 - 5
We are very excited to introduce this program for students aged 4-5, that aims specifically to introduce children to the martial arts in an environment that will also equip them with the social and classroom skills they will need as they enter or begin kindergarten. In addition to fundamental social and educational skills, students in this program will also begin refining their gross motor skill and will develop the foundation to begin immersive and partner-oriented martial arts training at age 6.
Although our Fundamentals program is designed for students aged 4-5, students age 3+ may be accepted for study on an individual basis.

Little Dragons Class
Ages 6 - 8
Our Little Dragons program (ages 6-8) introduces students to the culture of the martial arts, the dojo as a place of study, and emphasizes the following developmental areas: effective gross motor skill, basic fundamental martial arts skill, self-control, respect for others and authority, and classroom behavior. Students will finish their first year with a solid understanding of good basics, gross and fine motor skills, timing, moving in space, classroom behavior and skills in social interaction.
The developmental outcome is the foundation for an active and respectful member of the community.

Pre-Teens Class
Ages 9 - 12
Our Pre-Teens program (ages 9-12) introduces students to the culture, philosophy, etiquette, and history of martial arts study. Our program also builds on the following development areas: effective gross and fine motor skills, the principles fundamental to the study of the martial arts, the focus and perseverance to attain them, and the role they play in interpersonal situations. These years are rather formative in a child’s development, and emphasize confidence, efficacy, and peace of mind when facing difficulty. In particular, our Pre-Teens program incorporates respectful partner practice.
The developmental outcome is the foundation for an active, respectful and compassionate community leader.

Family Class
Ages 4+
Ever wish you could attend class as a family? Now you can! Our family group class provides an opportunity for adult and child learners alike to practice and explore the martial arts together. Since we typically see younger students begin their training earlier than our adult learners, this class dynamic provides a fun way for our youngest learners to share their knowledge, and experience with their parents.
This class timeslot also serves as a second adult class for all adult students.

Adult Class
Ages 13+
Our Adult program (ages 13+ ) introduces students to the culture of the dojo, and emphasizes personal development through the understanding of traditional martial arts concepts and practice. Students will acquire both knowledge and skill through individual practice and partner work. Students will also explore hone their practice in sparring, freestyle, and traditional kata form.

Sparring Class
Elective
Sparring is a controlled form of fighting. The object is to score points by tagging (with controlled punches and kicks) inside of the scoring zone. In short, it’s really fun, and available to all our full-time students.
