King Academic Summer Program - Performing Arts

Summer Institute's Performing Arts Camp offers middle and high school students (Grades 7-12) the opportunity to explore new subjects, or to advance in core academic or artistic subjects. Students who are serious about their academic and personal growth will find our intensive college preparatory courses, situated in a relaxed environment, the perfect way to excel this summer.

Fundamentals of Art for Beginners

 

Fundamentals Of Art For Beginners

  • Three Week Session: June 25 - July 13, 2018

This course is the foundation course and prerequisite for all other Visual Art electives at King, with the exception of Themes in Art History. It consists of a series of problems and projects designed to teach skills and techniques leading to the understanding and application of the elements of art and the principles of design to both two dimensional and three dimensional projects. These basic principles and elements are further enhanced by examination of the art and artists of different periods and cultures.

Introduction to Public Speaking

Yes, you can learn to speak comfortably in public! Communication skills are essential for success in academic, community and professional settings. Emphasis will include verbal and physical delivery, anxiety management strategies, developing rapport with the audience and creating a well- structured speech. Students will work in write, edit, and deliver speeches. There will be some daily homework.

Technical Theater

Technical Theater

  • Three Week Session: June 25 - July 13, 2018
  • Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

This course concentrates on the basic elements of theater production from a technical perspective. Class work includes aspects of design, set construction, and painting.

Come and play on your own individual keyboard. All skill levels are welcome. Students will receive individual instruction and have time to practice during class. Students will strengthen their ability to read music and play a variety of repertoire.


Creation Through Singing

Creation through Singing

  • Three Week Session: June 25 - July 13, 2018
  • Time: 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Music is the universal language! This class will help students discover their creativity while building confidence and encouraging fearlessness when facing performance situations. These situations are not just performing art situations, but also college interviews, public speaking and general class participation. The class will be designed to give acting/singing lessons. Students will be assigned scenes from musicals and will be given staging for each scene. All students will be active in every class. Audition etiquette will be addressed and there will be a performance at the end of the time. The class will be two hours and will involve individual instruction as well a group improvisation and participation.

Join us for both weeks or just one of the two! Open to Middle and Upper School students with an interest in examining dance through multiple lenses. Focus will be geared toward dedicated, hard-working students that are interested in taking their artistic abilities to the next level. Through intensive training and creative collaboration, students will prepare for future goals in higher education and careers in the field of dance. Students will practice techniques in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, and Hip Hop.
