Star Party! talk topic: Eclipse!

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 05/26/2017
In this talk, we'll discuss what an eclipse is, why they're comparatively rare (the last one visible in this much of the US was in 1979), what to expect and the best places to view the eclipse.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

On August 21st of this year, a solar eclipse will be visible in most of the continental US.  The area of totality, where the Moon completely obscures the Sun, will start in Oregon about 10:15am Pacific time and move eastward and a little south across the US, crossing 14 states and leaving the South Carolina coast at 2:49pm Eastern time.  In this talk, we'll discuss what an eclipse is, why they're comparatively rare (the last one visible in this much of the US was in 1979), what to expect and the best places to view the eclipse.  No prior knowledge of astronomy is required - just curiosity.  (Be aware that for a while the date was given as 4/21 on White Memorial's web site.  That's incorrect: it's definitely on the 28th, and due to a schedule conflict we will be in the Mott-Van Winkle classroom, not the Ceder room.  From the Museum, Mott-Van Winkle is about 150 yards back towards the main entrance.  There's a small parking lot there.)

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. You are invited to bring your own telescope or binoculars. FREE… Donations will be accepted

For the other talks this year we plan to go a little deeper into the science.  We'll discuss the nature of light, how astronomers figured out what stars are and our always popular topic of astro-imaging.
