Calling future writers, visual storytellers, artists, & filmmakers! In this two-week-long camp, Deaf and hard of hearing campers get an incredible opportunity to create their own digital storybooks after reading children’s books that encourage Zoom conversations about race, deafness, & disability. After Zooming with successful writers, artists, and visual storytellers from all corners of the country to discuss their work, we’ll create scripts, import storyboard slides, visualize storyboard concepts with images, drawings, and videoclips, edit visuals and narration with captions/texts, and publish your films in MP4. We’ll also explore 1) stereotypes & representations in text, art design, cinematography, art design, & 2 ) editing techniques in traditional filmmaking, and 3) Deaf Lens approaches. Then, we’ll learn how to portray specific characters in their new storybook on film. From a deaf perspective, we live in interesting times that include language deprivation and oppression. In today’s political climate, special attention will be given to exploring audism, racism, and ableism in the classroom, and how such histories & cultures influence the arts, and how activism can transform & impact Rochester’s community. By the end of this workshop, we will have enhanced our empathy, creative problem-solving, and critical thinking skills to go along with our newfound technical expertise. Through Writers & Books FaceBook and other social media channels, we will showcase our final films for parents and families on Friday, August 28th!
