Weekend Workshops – Candle Dipping - Wilton Historical Society

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sat, 01/21/2023
In the days before electric lights, candles were the only source of light in the dark for Wilton’s early residents. During the 17th and 18th centuries, beeswax was a commonly used material by New England colonists to create these valuable items. One way to manufacture candles was to repeatedly dip a wick into melted wax until it solidified into a usable candle. On January 21st from 11 am to 12 pm the Wilton Historical Society will recreate this common colonial chore by hosting hold its own candle making workshop for kids ages 6-10. Museum Educator Catherine Lipper will talk about where and when candles were used in Colonial households, followed by a candle-making demonstration and activity. The morning will conclude with a snack of honey cakes and sweet tea. Participants will have their own hand dipped candle to take home at the end of the workshop!
