Heckscher Farmers Camp (Half-Day) | Kids Out and About Fairfield County, CT <

Heckscher Farmers Camp (Half-Day)

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 08/02/2019
Immerse your camper in the daily chores and activities of our Heckscher Farm. Campers will be responsible for helping with daily chores such as grooming, exercising, feeding, and cleaning farm animals, and will also help with weekly produce harvest and planting in our organic garden. Learn how to properly exercise and provide enrichment for animals, explore our hay lofts and barns, and hang out in the pastures! Kids will also participate in hands-on cooking and farm crafts, and will work as a team to create a special tasty treat that they will share on Fridays for lunch.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Heckscher Farmers Summer Camp Information

Camp Hours: Heckscher Farmers Camp begins at 9:00 am and finishes at 1:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Due to camp prep, we cannot accommodate early drop-offs. Heckscher Farmers camp is only offered for three weeks in Sessions 2, 3, and 4 of Summer Camp.

Location: Heckscher Farmers campers can be dropped off and picked up at the Cheshire Barn, which is the large grey barn at the top of the farm. You can either come in through the main gate and walk up through the farm or can come in through the Observatory entrance and walk down to the barn.

First Day of Camp: On the first day of each session, the classroom will open at 8:50 am. We will be available to meet parents & answer any questions you may have about the program. At that time we will confirm that all documents are in order. If you have questions prior to your first day of camp, please feel free to e-mail our Camp Director, Lisa Monachelli at lmonachelli@stamfordmuseum.org.

Check-in & Check-out: At drop-off & pick-up we ask that you sign your child in/out with the on-duty counselor. If there are persons other then parents who are authorized to pick up your child they must be listed on your camper information form. If changes or additions occur during the course of camp, we must be notified in writing. Please note that we may ask for photo ID from those picking up campers–please have friends and family be prepared.

Medical Issues: Serious medical conditions must be brought to our attention before camp begins. If, for example, your child has an allergy requiring an EpiPen, there are additional documents that you and your child's doctor must sign before camp begins. All appropriate medical forms and permission agreements with required signatures MUST be submitted one week before the start of your child's first camp session. Per Connecticut State Camp Regulations, no child will be allowed to attend camp unless ALL forms are on file prior to their first day of camp.

Lunch & Snack: Please provide a daily bag snack and lunch (reusable bags preferred) for your child. We ask that campers come with a reusable water bottle each day. SM&NC is a NUT AWARE camp, so please do not send items with any type of tree nut/peanut product in them; please check labels carefully. On Fridays, campers will partake in a special cooking project which they will share in for lunch. If you have questions on what cooking projects we will be doing, please ask. Projects are always nut-free and we will avoid other allergens as needed, depending on enrollment.

Dress Code: Long pants and a T-shirt are recommended. Since campers will be working on the farm, open toed shoes, flip flops, or sandals are NOT allowed. Socks and a pair of sneakers you don't mind getting dirty are perfect. We also recommend bringing an extra change of clothes and we may ask for a towel or water shoes if we are using sprinklers or exploring the stream. Please be sure that your child arrives at camp with a long-lasting, waterproof sunscreen applied. Due to state regulations, our staff cannot apply sunscreen or bug spray. Please check for ticks at each day's end!

Group Size: Heckscher Farmers camp is limited to 12 campers entering grades 1-4. This small group size allows campers to partake in farm experiences that would not be possible with a larger camp size. All campers in a session will work together but may be separated into two smaller groups for some activities.

Registering for more than one week: Campers may register for more than one week of Heckscher Farmers camp. Some activities may be repeated but most of the activities and projects will be different each week.

We are looking forward to meeting you and sharing a memorable summer experience.
