JOSEPH CONRAD OVERNIGHT SUMMER SAILING CAMP - Mystic Seaport Museum - Mystic, CT
*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 08/16/2019
From 1934 to 1936, the full-rigged ship Joseph Conrad sailed around the world with a crew of youth. While the vessel does not sail today, campers still experience what life aboard was like for those young mariners by sleeping on the historic vessel and learning to be a part of everyday shipboard work, such as climbing the rigging, recording weather, and water data in the logbook.
Each day campers learn to sail traditional Dyer Dhow dinghies, and during afternoon apprenticeships campers can choose to focus on marine science, astronomy, marlinspike seamanship, and other traditional maritime skills such as art and music under the guidance of Museum experts. For more information on these apprenticeships click here. Campers also participate in fun activities at night, including a Planetarium show, and an interactive chantey show. Campers have the opportunity to explore the Mystic River, celebrate “crossing the equator,” and much more!
Campers return home with a new level of sailing proficiency, knowledge about our local maritime heritage, and lasting friendships. Campers who attend more than one session can choose a new apprenticeship skill to master and continue to progress through our five levels of dinghy sailing, from beginner to racing skipper! Conrad Camp is a state-licensed program with an experienced staff of US Sailing-certified instructors. Permanently moored on our waterfront with flush toilets, showers, heat/AC, and electricity, Joseph Conrad is outfitted with comfortable living quarters for up to 50 campers and staff.
