Summer Camp at Woodcock Nature Center

Woodcock Nature Center's State Licensed Summer Camp is a chance for your child to explore our beautiful 149-acre preserve through hands-on activities that bring them closer to our local wildlife. Some weeks even have a Friday night campout option for campers and their parents to set up tents, roast some marshmallows, and enjoy all the wonders a star-filled Woodcock night has to offer! (More info below. PreK and older groups only.) The ratio of staff to campers is 1 to 6 or better and the maximum number of campers per group is 16. Registration for each camp week closes at Noon the Thursday prior.

2019 Camp Groups

*Grades children are entering in Fall 2019*

 

NESTLINGS (3's & early 4's):  9:00am-1:00pm - $62/day

This introduction to summer camp is for 3 and 4 year olds and offers daily signups (campers must turn 3 at least one month prior to the start of your desired camp week). There will be different topics each day with live animals, nature walks, crafts, games, and story time. Registration for this group is by day; come for any or all days! Groups will be limited to 8 campers with 2 counselors and additional programming from senior staff. This is a drop off program, and campers need to bring a NUT-FREE snack and lunch, water bottle, change of clothes and be dressed to be outside each day, rain or shine. Nestlings are not eligible for the optional campout. Due to the small group size, space is very limited. We are thrilled to be able to offer this experience to our littlest nature explorers!

*CAMPERS MUST BE FULLY POTTY TRAINED AND ABLE TO USE THE BATHROOM INDEPENDENTLY IN ORDER TO ATTEND THIS CAMP*

FLEDGLINGS (PreK-K):  9:00am-1:00pm - $300/week

Our Fledglings camp promises a different nature theme each day. From Forest Friends to Turtle Power, each day is filled with live animals, arts and crafts, hikes, games, and other age specific activities focusing on the theme of the day. This half day program is for eligible 4's (campers must turn 4 by start of your desired camp week) and children entering Kindergarten in Fall 2019. Half day campers should come with a NUT-FREE snack and lunch, re-usable water bottle, a change of clothes and be dressed to be outside each day, rain or shine.

SCOUTS (1st-2nd):  9:30am-3:00pm - $385/week

Our full day Scouts will investigate nature themes through woodland expeditions, stream exploration, scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, wilderness games, live animals, and nature art! Children will be introduced to forest and pond habitats, food chains, local plants and animals, and animal defenses. Some themes include Animal Architects, Dirt Detectives, Spidey Senses, and Awesome Arthropods. This full day program is for children entering 1st and 2nd grade in Fall 2019. Campers should come each day dressed to be outside, rain or shine, with a change of clothes, a lunch bag that includes an ice pack, a NUT-FREE snack and lunch and a reusable water bottle. 

3rd-4th,  5th-6th  and 7th-8th:  9:30am-3:00pm - $385/week

Throughout each week, campers will explore wetlands and woodlands, learn about the ecology of the area, identify animal and plant species, and develop basic wilderness skills.

 

These three age groups will all participate in wading, canoeing, survival shelters, team-building games, and animal tracking. In addition, each age group will participate in specific activities as follows:

 

RANGERS (3rd-4th): Campfire cooking, woodland obstacle course, and handling of our resident animals.                                

EXPLORERS (5th-6th): Fire building & campfire cooking, minnow traps, lashing & nature construction, terrarium design, and handling & feeding of our resident animals.

UNCHARTED (7th-8th): Fire building & campfire cooking, whittling/wood burning & tool making, lashing and nature construction, and wildlife monitoring with camera traps.

 

This full day program is for children entering 3rd-4th, 5th-6th or 7th-8th grades respectively in Fall 2019. Campers should come each day dressed to be outside, rain or shine, with a change of clothes, a lunch bag that includes an ice pack, a NUT-FREE snack and lunch and a reusable water bottle.

Optional Campout

An optional camp out is held here at the Nature Center on the Friday of select weeks (weather permitting; see camp schedule for eligible weeks). This popular event is open ONLY to campers attending that week, and their parents (No siblings. Nestlings not eligible). There is a 40 person maximum. Sign-ups and tent rentals are first come/first served. Sign up forms will be accepted starting at drop off Monday morning of that camp week and are due, with payment, no later than Wednesday afternoon at 3:00pm.

If you want to be in a session that is currently full, please call the office at 203-762-7280. Occasionally families need to cancel registration and space becomes available. If space does becomes available we will call you. If you signed up for another session and the wait-listed session opens and you want to switch into it, CHANGE FEES WILL APPLY. Please read our POLICIES for more information.

 

 

CIT: "COUNSELOR IN TRAINING" - Unpaid Volunteer (14 year olds & up) 

**There is a fee of $150 for first year CITs**

CIT's assist the summer camp counselors in providing a safe and fun camp experience. They will help facilitate activities, games, crafts, songs, stories, hikes, and more. In addition to supervising campers, CIT's will also assist with camp preparation and clean-up, and will serve as a positive role model for the campers. CIT's must commit to at least one full week (Monday-Friday) of camp. Hours range from 9:00-1:00 to 9:30-3:00. Applicants must be enthusiastic about camp, enjoy working with children, animals, and the natural environment!

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be 14 or older. Must have experience working with children (babysitting, tutoring, previous camp experience). Must have enthusiasm!
