Whitby SchoolAcademic Rigor, Redefined for the 21st Century
Schools that associate academic rigor with test taking, hours of homework and rote memorization of facts are preparing students for success in the last century. Rigor at Whitby is much more expansive as we provide our students with opportunities to explore real-world concepts and issues, challenge assumptions, think critically and acquire skills that they will need to apply throughout their educational and future professional journeys. A Whitby education is about allowing students to define success on their own terms by inspiring their love of learning, broadening their sense of responsibility, developing their critical thinking skills and empowering them to take action in a global community. These are the ideals that we value and they inform our teaching, learning and curriculum development each and every day.
The Long Ridge School
Founded in 1938, The Long Ridge School is an independent pre-school through elementary school serving children two years old through Grade 5 in North Stamford. The Long Ridge School is a diverse community where children experience the joy of learning in small groups taught by experienced, caring teachers. The curriculum provides challenging, theme-based, hands-on learning experiences. The program includes classes in science, art, music, physical education and Spanish. Children are respected as individuals with innate curiosity and valued for their uniqueness, ideas and talents. Transportation for Stamford and NY residents (within 15 miles). Before and After School Care Options.
When young learners see education as a place to experiment, create, construct, and connect, they develop a more expansive mindset about what “school” can offer them. They experience education as a path of discovery, understanding, wonder, and joy. These ideas are grounded in the Reggio-Emilia inspired, project-based teaching and learning practiced at King School. We encourage our PreKindergarten and Kindergarten learners to collaboratively explore intentionally created vibrant classroom spaces where children are actively engaged in the process of learning from the earliest ages.
